Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act is the law requiring that federal interest rate ceilings on deposits sold to the public is phased out so that deposit interest rates could more closely reflect prevailing market conditions it also authorized the offering NOW accounts throughout the United States, which pay an explicit interest return to the customer and have third-party payment powers.
