Descriptive scale

Definition (1):

A descriptive scale can be defined as any rating scale that uses adjectives or phrases to determine performance ratings.

Definition (2):

An evaluator needs to be clear and certain about what each point on a rating scale indicates. A descriptive scale provides an evaluator with a description of the defining characteristics for each rating point for evaluating performance in a constant and standardized way.

Definition (3):

A descriptive scale consists of a series of adjectives or descriptive phrases referring to different levels of performance.

An evaluator can also tailor this rating scale for every assessment according to her/his convenience and the type of assessment. This rating scale can be 3-point-rating, 5-point rating, or more points rating. The evaluation method can be clearer with the following example.

Here, the performance of a candidate will be rated at 2 or higher to be evaluated as meeting the requirements.
