McNaughten rules

McNaughten rules is a mid-nineteenth-century legal ruling that is still widely used in deciding whether a criminal defendant is insane and therefore not responsible for his actions. The ruling states that a person is criminally liable unless his reason was so defective that he did not realize the nature of his action or that it was wrong.
