over determined

In psychoanalysis something that has more than one cause; used particularly about the origin of a neurosis or the meaning of a dream is called over determined. As most neuroses and most dreams are considered to be over determined the process of analysis usually goes beyond the simple-minded search for a single explanation to Complex phenomena.
