COBOL is an acronym for Common Business-Oriented Language. The program was developed at the Pentagon in 1959, the product of a joint effort by the federal government and the computer industry. COBOL is the dominant language of the business world and many industries use thousands of lines of code written in COBOL. It is easy to learn and has an English-like structure. It is excellent for processing large data files and performing repetitive tasks.
