Communication Channels: Understanding Communication Channels with Example

What is Communication Channel?

Communication Channels deliver and receive messages from target buyers and include newspapers, magazines, radio, television, mail, telephone, billboards, posters, fliers, CDs, audiotapes, and the Internet. Beyond these, firms communicate through the look of their retail stores and web sites and other media.

Understanding Communication Channel

All effective collaborative projects and partnerships rely on effective communication channels. Communication keeps a company going forward. People can communicate in a variety of ways, including written communication, verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and visual communication. Regardless of the channels of the channel we use, it is critical that the message be transmitted accurately.

There are a variety of communication channels that exist in the present time and these are-

  • Face-to-face conversations
  • Videoconferencing
  • Audio conferencing
  • Emails
  • Live chat
  • Written letters and memos
  • Chats and messaging
  • Blogs
  • Social media
  • Formal written documents
  • Spreadsheets

The choice of whether to communicate verbally or in writing can be crucial in organizations. Furthermore, a wise manager understands the nonverbal cues communicated by both types of communication. The importance of effective communication is to align the connection medium to the core message. Communication may slide down from supervisors to line managers, up from line managers to supervisors, or throughout and amongst employees at the very same organizational level of power.

Practical Example

Mia prefers to record information and is less concerned with receiving a response. She is physically distanced from the Recipient and does not require a lot of interaction from them. In this case, written communication is the perfect way to go.

Jack, on the other hand, is communicating a delicate or sensitive message that requires direct answers. Plus he does not require a lasting record of the encounter. For him, verbal communication in person may be the appropriate and more efficient communication channel.
