Effects of Stock Dividends

How do stock dividends affect stockholders’ equity? They change the composition of stockholders’ equity, because they transfer to paid-in capital a portion of retained earnings. However, total stockholders’ equity remains the same. Stock dividends also have no effect on the par or stated value per share. But the number of shares outstanding increases, and the book value per share decreases.
