Identification

Identification refers to

1.  The process of wanting to be like another person as much as possible, imitating that person’s behavior and adopting similar beliefs and values.

2. The process of determining the friendly or hostile character of an unknown detected contact.

3. In arms control, the process of determining which nation is responsible for the detected violations of any arms control measure.

4. In ground combat operations, discrimination between recognizable objects as being friendly or enemy, or the name that belongs to the object as a member of a class.  Also called ID.

In general terms, recognizing the identity or nature of someone or something; in psychoanalysis, emulating the behaviour of a person with whom one has a powerful emotional bond is called identification.
