Information power

Definition (1):

The ability to influence others based on your control of the dissemination of information and your control of the dissemination of information that is important to subordinates and others yet not otherwise easily obtained. Information power can be particularly effective and is derived from a manager’s access and control over the dissemination of information that is important to subordinates yet not easily available in the organization.

Definition (2):

“Information power is a form of personal or collective power that is based on controlling information needed by others in order to reach an important goal. Our society is now reliant on information power as knowledge for influence, decision making, credibility, and control.”

Among all types of power, this power is the most transitory. Once an individual gives her/his information away, s/he gives his/her power away. For instance, someone shares the secret, her/his power is gone. Because this power is grounded in what a person knows about a specific situation’s content. Other types of power don’t depend on the content.
