Special-purpose carriers

Special-purpose carriers, also known as value-added carriers, refer to companies that add value to the basic communications services provided by a common carrier by providing E-mail, videoconferencing, correction of transmission errors, solution of compatibility problems between different computer systems and terminals, backup services, and network management. Special-purpose carriers generally charge their clients a basic monthly fee; additional charges are levied based on volume and type of use.
