Externalization

Externalization used in various ways that sometimes shade into each other, e.g. regarding one's thoughts and feelings as being caused by some external agency; projecting one's thoughts and feelings on to the external world; seeing one's own mental processes as being outside one's own mind (as an hallucination); the process that occurs throughout childhood of separating off one's sense of self from the external world; ego formation in Freudian terms.
