Altered states of consciousness
Altered states of consciousness situations in which one's subjective experience is different from normal waking consciousness. These alterations can be caused by drugs or stimulants or emotional upheaval or a combination of these. Religious ecstasy is a common type of altered state and is often accompanied by visions and other mystical experiences.
