Altruism is helping behavior that is beneficial to others but clearly requires self-sacrifice. For example, people who helped strangers escape from the burning World Trade Center towers during the 9-11 terrorist attack, putting themselves at mortal risk, would be considered altruistic.
Altruism means unselfish concern with the welfare of others.
