Daemon is a UNIX term for a component of any server program that “listens” to incoming requests for a specific service across the network: for example, a Telnet server might include a Telnet daemon, a program that always runs, ready to serve Telnet requests: the same component of an FTP server is called an FTP daemon, and so forth.
