Echolocation is a technique for locating objects in the environment by emitting sound waves and then perceiving them as they reflect back off the objects. This technique, which is the basis of sonar systems for detecting objects in the water, has been learned from the behaviour of whales and bats. Blind people use it, often without realizing it, when they tap their sticks on walls or floors. The echoes they hear allow them to locate objects around them.
