IBM’s Cabling system

Numeric cable designations (Type 1 through Type 9) representing the grades of cabling recognized by IBM’s Cabling system. Types 2 and 9 are the most commonly used networking cables: Type 3 is voice grade only, which is unsuitable for networking use.
