James-Lange theory of emotions is a fusion of two similar theories of the emotions put forward by the American philosopher William James and the Danish physiologist CG. Lange. In essence they suggest that what we refer to as emotion is our conscious awareness of the bodily changes that follow an exciting event. Thus it would be more correct to say that we are sad because we cry, rather than that we cry because we are sad.
