Reductionism

In science generally reductionism is the attempt to explain phenomena at a given level in terms of phenomena at a more fundamental level. In psychology this usually takes the form of explanations from the physical sciences and may be motivated more by the wish to explain away than explain. For example, sexual intercourse may be described as 'the repeated collision of two bodies', which is not wrong but doesn't quite capture the intense interest people take in the subject.
