SET (secure electronic transmission) is a vehicle for legitimizing both the merchant and the consumer as well protecting the consumer’s credit card number. Under SET the card number is never directly sent to he merchant. Rather a third party is introduced to the transactions with whom both the merchant and consumer communicate to validate one another as well as the transaction.
