Definition (3):
Terminal disinfection is also known as final disinfection. It has the purpose of preparing complete areas or rooms so that the patients can be cared for or treated there without the risk of getting an infection. This measure for disinfection is applied in areas or rooms where a contagious disease-affected or infected patient or resident has been treated or cared for. Based on the type of pathogen or the existing disease each near-patient object/surface or each accessible surface (such as wall or floors and the like) is to be disinfected.
This disinfection is advised to be performed with disinfectant cleaners for surfaces that are bactericidal, virucidal, and pesticidal against bacteria, viruses, and pests. If required, other disinfectants and concentrations with a wider spectrum of functions and other times for exposure than for regular or routine disinfection require to be observed.
