Advance officer

Advance officer refers to an officer designated by the commander to precede the column by a distance sufficient to reconnoiter the route of march and to select alternate routes or detours if required; to instruct and place guides and route markers, where appropriate; to notify authorities of approach of column and receive instructions or changes to instructions at highway regulation points. This officer may also command the advance party.
