Free association

Free association is the one of the techniques used by Freud in developing psychoanalysis. It requires the patient to follow her train of thoughts and images wherever they may lead without any guidance or instructions from the analyst. Eventually from the patient's associations the analyst may start to perceive clues about areas of conflict and disturbances that are surfacing from the unconscious.
