Latent function

Latent function is an unconscious or unintended function that may reflect hidden purposes.

Latent function is an unintended consequence of one part of a sociocultural system on the whole or on other parts of that system. Latent functions are often indirect and not always obvious. For example, in the United States, the reform of big city political machines had many unintended consequences for the governability of American cities.
