Prior period adjustment
The correction of an error in previously issued financial statements is known as a prior period adjustment. The company makes the correction directly to retain Earnings because the effect of the error is now in this account. The net income for the prior period has been recorded in retained earnings through the journalizing and posting of closing entries.
