Rest and recuperation or R&R is a military slang. Other interchangeable terms are rest and recreation or rest and relaxation or rest and rehabilitation. This term is used for a soldier or international UN staff’s free time who is serving in a distant (no family) or unaccompanied duty stations. Some militaries such as the British Armed Forces and the United States Armed Forces use this term.

Staff members need to perform duties for longer periods at duty stations under dangerous, difficult, and stressful conditions are granted rest and recuperation’s regular periods under the terms of the current instruction, for protecting their health and welfare and for ensuring expected work performance on their duties’ restoration, while protecting the organization’s functional readiness. Rest and recuperation is a way by which officers and other eligible persons may take authorized regular time off for leaving the duty station allowed for rest and relaxation purposes. It provides them with a break from the hazardous, isolated, and stressful working situations under which they perform. It is not a financial compensation or an extra annual leave entitlement for the level of insecurity and difficulty of a duty station.
