Cash balance held by a firm to take advantage of opportunities in any time of firm's normal operations is called Speculative Motive.

According to Khan and Jain,” Speculative motive refers to the desire of a firm to take advantage of opportunities which present themselves at unexpected moments and which are typically outside the normal course of business.”
