Independent Contractor

An Independent Contractor is a self-employed individual who provides a service to clients independently or sometimes, on behalf of a company or agency but that is under an express or implied agreement and s/he is not subject to anybody's control, or right to control, regarding the method and means adopted.

Often people with higher expertise in a certain skill opt for providing services on a contractual basis independently which means they do not work under anyone. It makes them self-employed and since they provide services on a contractual basis, they are contractors who work independently.

Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, designers etc. can be good examples of handiworks that require a certain level of expertise and practice. People in these professions are often seen providing their services as independent contractors.

For example, neighbourhoods often seek services from one or two local service providers who someone in the neighbourhood has suggested to be great. It can be someone who lives two blocks away and happens to provide plumbing services on call and people will reach them on their personal phone instead of through an agency.

S/he will provide the services at a pre-agreed-upon rate and anyone in the vicinity that requires their service can seek so on a contractual basis.
