Ripple or Chain Effects

Ripple or chain effect refers to the effect caused when one promotion or transfer in the organization causes several other personnel movements in the organization as a series of subordinates are promoted to fill the sequential openings.

The term ripple effect is used because it is similar to the effect that a fish jumping out of the water in one part of a lake has on other remote bays of the same lake—the waves ripple away from the site of the original movement.
