Passenger volume

Definition (1):

Passenger volume is the total volume of space available for passengers in the front and rear seat(s) of a vehicle.

Definition (2):

According to Airline Forums, passenger volume is counted in 3 separate groups- arriving, departing, and through passengers. Each group states various demands upon airport security and security officers are assigned accordingly for meeting those demands.

Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a crucial topic for urban transportation planning practice and research. A research was performed for studying rail transit station-based TOD’s effect on daily passenger volume in a station with the help of regression analysis in Shanghai, China. This volume in each station was the dependent variable. Explanatory variables consist of station area population and employment, metro network accessibility, commuting distances of residents, coupling with commercial function centers, and status as an interchange station. The major findings were:

  • Passenger volume is positively related to employment density and commuting distance of residents around the station;
  • Stations having earlier opening dates and performing as transfer nodes are likely to have a positive relationship with the volume of passengers;
  • Metro stations more integrated with nearby commercial development are likely to have a larger volume of passengers.
