Theory Y

Theory Y is a positive view which assumes that employees are creative, enjoy work, seek responsibility, and can exercise self-direction.


Theory Y is the assumption that employees enjoy work and seek social, esteem, and self-actualization fulfillment.


 Theory Y is a philosophy of management with a positive perception of subordinates’ potential for and general attitudes toward work. It assumes that subordinates can be self-directing, will seek responsibility, and find work as natural as play or rest.


In Douglas McGregor’s theory of managerial style, the managerial assumption that employees want to be challenged like to display creativity, and can be highly motivated to perform well if given some freedom to direct or manage their own behavior.
